Please think twice using a screwdriver to open a laptop casing
(Compaq sells the perfect tool for the job). There is more than one solution to most symptoms (i.e.: Blank screen - Cracked bulb, bad motherboard or display, bad inverter - dc to high voltage circuit or open circuit in the LCD pink and white wiring to the end caps).

SHOULD I UPDATE MY BIOS ON MY LAPTOP?
Our advice to our customers is to read the fine print from the downloading website
[In the fine print the software update will warn you if your computer fails to boot or if the laptop becomes unusable it is not their responsibility}. Please be aware that we have reports from many customers who update the bios themselves and as a result have left their laptops inoperable. Why well maybe the virus affected the update or a fault in the registry or a crc error in the download. We advise leaving your laptop bios as the manufacturer setting.

Why is my laptop display white?
Well did your laptop display lcd get taken out of your laptop and a replacement 14.1" presumably direct cross referenced compatible lcd was plugged into the laptop and shorted out the 3.3 volts supply from the laptop system board thus now your lcd is powering up all LCD's as bright white with no data, howeverl it happens that: Example a 14.1" LP141XA 20 pin data connector from your system board [flex data cable] when plugged into a 14.1" NEC NL10276BC28-11A will take the supply +3.3 volts DC and short it down to chassis earth ground 0 volts potential thus giving the laptop no other choice but to burn out or worse never power up again yes we have fixed VAIO laptops that have no +3.3 volts supplying the lcd driver PCB, if you are not sure which lcd will fit your laptop send the laptop in for one of our experienced electronics techs to check for you.

Why is my laptop battery not holding a charge like it did when new?
Laptop batteries will not recharge over and over forever so why run it on battery power when you can use the mains!
Should I leave my battery in the laptop, well yes to recharge it we advise keeping it fully charged and not storing in a dead/discharged state.

Should I leave my expensive laptop rechargable battery inside the laptop if the laptop is on all day used as a desktop, NO we say take the battery out and leave it in the desk charged for when it it needed, Why should i take it out while I leave the laptop on for hours, well we know the battery has complex electronics mounted on a PCB inside the battery constantly trying to memorize the state of the individual cells so as to keep account of there recharge needs - in side the notebook battery pack, We Believe leaving your battery on constant charge in some battery designs can critically lower the life of your laptop battery. thus take it out if you use your laptop as a desktop or pluged in every day, but use a backup mains inverter for when the mains fluctuates or momentarily turns off as you will lose your application documents your working on,
    Our advice to our customers is to take out your battery when the laptop is used as a desktop. leaving the battery in and running it down when you could be using a AC adapter pluged into the mains is lowering the life of your rechargable notebook batery, best regards R Mowe electronics tech.

Why has replacing the laptop memory caused my notebook to fail to post/Boot ?
Well your memory comes protected form the world of static in its antistatic bag, laptop motherboards are also sensitive to high voltage in humans, we advise our customers to place one hand on the steel frame of the printer port shroud or the VGA 15 pin connector shroud, which if the skin is in contact with the steel chassis of the laptop the humans body should be earthed at the same potential voltage as the system board thus when the alternative hand holding and fitting the memory into the laptop memory slot is used there is less chance of a strike/jump of highly charged electrons injecting themselves into YOUR laptop motherboard, Be even safer and use a static free workbench and a wrist strap attached electronically to the bench mat. Is if worth repairing a red tint laptop LCD display

What does board level repair mean?
It refers to repairing electronic circuit and components on the laptop motherboard/systemboard (i.e.:capacitors, diodes IC's, Resistor banks etc.) on a system board. Can you guarantee you can fix my computer?
We repair most of the machines we diagnose. However there are some machines where we must replace a major component rather than repair the existing part due to Heat Burn out or lightning damaged Circuits, or because of extensive damage to the unit. We always try our best, but we realistically don't boast every job is repairable. We also repair plastic parts (i.e. case, hinges, etc.)

How can I speed up the repair
1 Always include a description of the fault or problem.
2 Give us a return address for your merchandise (if we receive packages without relevant info they it will get delayed)

4 We receive many emails if a message is urgent please use the subject field of the email as a Description.

We try to diagnose and post a result of our findings and repair cost to you within 2-5 business days. To expedite a repair we charge a $50 fee

A brief review of laptop screens?
--they disguise under various names: LCD, LCD display,
liquid crystal display, laptop display, laptop screen.

--they come in two major flavors: active matrix and dual matrix,
also called active scan and dual scan respectively. You could
also encounter the names Active Color Screen (TFT) and
Passive color or DSTN (HPA) screen.

--the size ranges from approximately 10" to 15" in diagonal But did you know the the bigger the LCD the bigger the squares they use as thin film transistors (square dots) so rather than asking for the biggest display think quality ask for a LCD that can display 1600 x 1200 dpi the average 15" is only the same amount of dots used as a 12.1" used in the Compaq m300 But the smaller the LCD that displays at 1024 the better the quality looks?. What makes you qualified to repair our unit?
Our tech,s have a degree in digital electronics, we use wrist straps to avoid static injection of high voltage from our clothes into a units systemboard. Some people just swap things out, We do electronic repair to circuits. And integrated circuit surface mount replacement. we can even reconnect, ripped flex data cables. The owner has 25 years experience with Electronics / TV repair and computers. We do not boast to being capable of fixing every unit some are not economical to repair or we might not have the circuit diagram for some intermittent repairs, we try to please but do not boast as being the king, of laptop repairs we acknowledge when a laptop has past its usefulness and try to save our customers putting good money into a bad unit.

Which laptop brand do you recommend?
We recommend VAIO and HP and Toshiba and Fujitsu Laptops, we find them well built and the highest quality. Similar is Dell IBM, Gateway winbest. The Best laptops as user friendly for maintenance and repairs are HP and Sony VAIO.

What does Swappable mean?
Swappable means that The Laptop will come with a CD-ROM Drive and a Floppy Drive. However, only one of the drives can be used in the Internal Drive Bay at a time. In order to change Drives, the drive currently using the drive bay must be physically removed (Swapped Out) and the other drive installed, while the unit is turned off.

How old are your Laptops and Where do they come from?
We can not say how old they are because we don't know who the original owners were or when they bought them. And most Laptops do not have Dates on them. We buy these Laptop computers from brokers who have purchased them in large lots from companies that are upgrading or liquidating their equipment or selling off lease equipment.

What is the difference between types of Displays available?
Active Matrix (also known as TFT) is the best type of display that is made. If you are very fussy about your display, you should get this type. HPA (High Performance Addressing) is the next best. It was designed by IBM. Dual Scan is the third best option. The quality of Dual Scan varies greatly. Some are acceptable, and some are not. Dual Scan is the least expensive option.
     An active-matrix display is considered better than a dual-scan one because it is brighter, is easier to view at side angles and minimizes the so-called ghosting effect when the cursor moves across the screen. A TFT display will cost more.

How do the different display sizes relate to resolution?
As a general rule:
Displays at 10.5 inches or less run at VGA resolution which is 640 x 480
Displays at 11 to 12 inches run at SVGA resolution which is 800 x 600
Displays at 13 to 14 inches run at XGA resolution which is 1024 x 768
1400X1050== SXGA LP150E1 LP157E1 15.7"
1600X1200 = WXGA some windscreen versions

{���} Do you notice with certain LCD panel Monitors that the screen saver confuses the display mode (when resume from save mode) and you keep having to hit menu then select auto mode on your LCD control to correct the display, I found using this screen saver [has password control for win 98 security], stops the error.

How do I load software onto a Laptop Computer that does not have a CD-ROM?
There are basically (3) ways to do this.

1. Acquire the floppy disk version of the software that you want to install. This is usually available from the software company at no additional cost.
2. Purchase a LapLink Cable (about $10). Then using the parallel ports on your Laptop computer and a workstation, connect the two computers. For DOS, you can use INTERLNK.exe and INTERSVR.exe. For Windows 95, you can use Direct Cable Connection (which comes with Windows 95) and share the workstation's CD-ROM.
3. Purchase an external portable CD-ROM Drive.
4. If still no joy, Mail in the laptop without battery without ac brick with all internal bay items removed (to keep light for air mail) and we will install the operating system you need for $88. or visit our shop

What is the difference between Notebooks and Laptops?
Today, they are virtually the same. With earlier generations, Notebooks were smaller and lighter in weight than Laptops.

How long should a battery charge last?
Healthy batteries will usually last about 2 hours. As they get older, they will not last as long. Also do not leave laptop batteries inside laptops when the unit is used as a desktop, take them out when fully charged and store them keep them charged though every month see also.

What is the difference in Batteries?

• Lithium-Ion are the newest and most desirable. Lithium-Ion batteries can store more energy than their nickel metal hydride counterparts and thus tend to last longer.
• Nickel-Metal Hydride - Second choice but expensive.
• Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) - Must be run down completely before recharging to keep them healthy.
• TIP: For longest life, you should cycle all batteries once a month regardless of type, particularly if you are connected to AC most of the time.

How do I know if a laptop computer is Internet Ready?
Here is what we recommend for surfing the Internet today at top speed:
You will need a modem. If you are using a Laptop computer, then make sure that it has an open PCMCIA slot to install a PCMCIA modem. Make sure you have a Pentium or better notebook with at least 16mb RAM. Your speed on the Internet will depend heavily on your modem speed & your phone line, get the fastest that you can afford. Also a great tip is to turn off show pictures in internet explorer advance preferences, I go a step better than I.E.5 I use old Netscape Ver 3. I turn of auto load images & all JavaScript, this is a great browser faster than any I have used if I wish to see a picture I just click the picture place holder and then and only then will my browser send the request for the image to start to load from the server. Why MS didn't think of this is questionable. Do not be afraid of Netscape 3 it will not overwrite IE5, and it doesn't create or use index.dat.

Need a browser capable of surfing with a normal dialup 300 times faster than normal browsers (it turns of [See the X] with a click of mouse NO pictures, thus downloads so much faster!) http://www.opera.com and try Monzilla FireFox a great fast browser, doesn't rely on dcom or ms_sql-m or other hidden protocols! Just good old safe ftp.

How can I purchase a Used Laptop Computer with confidence?

Fourth:  Will my laptop OVERHEAT? Take a look under the laptop to see if the CPU is cooled through the base of it, why: well if cooled below when the unit is placed on top of your lap, your lap will prevent cooling of the CPU through the vents: We suggest only buying lap-tops if the cpu is cooled through the sides or the back - if your using it on your lap or sofa etc, rather than as a desktop computer.

What kind of problems can you handle?
Our electronics technicians are able to perform system board level repair on laptops, there is not many problems we cannot diagnose. Of course, some systems may require a part or component that is no longer available which makes some repairs more difficult and time consuming. Some common problems we encounter and repair each day are blank screens, systems that don't power on, or turn on then off, systems that cannot charge batteries, ac adapter sockets which are broken, and similar problems. We also perform simpler repairs such as keyboard replacements, memory upgrades, LCD replacements just to name a few.

PCMCIA repairs can they be fixed?
Yes if your external CD-ROM no longer shows busy light or activity or is lifeless we can simply with internal wiring inside the laptop repair the fault, is it a long process,
no it only takes us a hour and we normaly have good results.

HANDLING PRECAUTIONS FOR TFT-LCD MODULE

Please pay attention to the followings in handling- TFT-LCD products;

1 ASSEMBLY PRECAUTION

(1) Please use the mounting hole on the module side in installing and do not beading or wrenching LCD in assembling. And please do not drop, bend or twist LCD module in handling.

(2) Please design display housing in accordance with the following guide lines.

(2.1) Housing case must be destined carefully so as not to put stresses on LCD all sides and not to wrench module. The stresses may cause non-uniformity even if there is no non-uniformity statically.

(2.2) Keep sufficient clearance between LCD module back surface and housing when the LCD module is mounted. Approximately 1.0 mm of the clearance in the design is recommended taking into account the tolerance of LCD module thickness and mounting structure height on the housing.

(2.3) When some parts, such as, FPC cable and ferrite plate, are installed underneath the LCD module, still sufficient clearance is required, such as 0.5mm. This clearance is, especially, to be reconsidered when the additional parts are implemented for EMI countermeasure.

(2.4) Design the inverter location and connector position carefully so as not to give stress to lamp cable, or not to interface the LCD module by the lamp cable.

(2.5) Keep sufficient clearance between LCD module and the others parts, such as inverter and speaker so as not to interface the LCD module. Approximately 1.0mm of the clearance in the design is recommended.

(3) Please do not push or scratch LCD panel surface with any-thing hard. And do not soil LCD panel surface by touching with bare hands. ( Polarizer film, surface of LCD panel is easy to be flawed.)

(4) Please do not press any parts on the rear side such as source TCP, gate TCP, control circuit board and FPCs during handling LCD module. If pressing rear part is unavoidable, handle the LCD module with care not to damage them.

(5) Please wipe out LCD panel surface with absorbent cotton or soft cloth in case of it being soiled.

(6) Please wipe out drops of adhesives like saliva and water on LCD panel surface immediately. They might damage to cause panel surface variation and color change.

(7) Please do not take a LCD module to pieces and reconstruct it. Resolving and reconstructing modules may cause them not to work well.

(8) Please do not touch metal frames with bare hands and soiled gloves. A color change of the metal frames can happen during a long preservation of soiled LCD modules.

(9) Please pay attention to handling lead wire of backlight so that it is not tugged in connecting wit inverter.

 

2 OPERATING PRECAUTIONS

(1) Please be sure to turn off the power supply before connecting and disconnecting signal input cable.

(2) Please do not change variable resistance settings in LCD module. They are adjusted to the most suitable value. If they are changed, it might happen LCD does not satisfy the characteristics specification.

(3) Please consider that LCD backlight takes longer time to become stable of radiation characteristics in low temperature than in room temperature.

(4) A condensation might happen on the surface and inside of LCD module in case of sudden charge of ambient temperature.

(5) Please pay attention to displaying the same pattern for very long time. Image might stick on LCD. If then, time going on can make LCD work well.

(6) Please obey the same caution descriptions as ones that need to pay attention to ordinary electronic parts.

3 PRECAUTIONS WITH ELECTROSTATICS

(1) This LCD module use CMOS-IC on circuit board and TFT-LCD panel, and so it is easy to be affected by electrostatics. Please be careful with electrostatics by the way of your body connecting to the ground and so on.

(2) Please remove protection film very slowly on the surface of LCD module to prevent from electrostatics occurrence.

4 STORAGE PRECAUTIONS

(1) When you store LCDs for a long time, it is recommended to keep the temperature between 0? ~40? without the exposure of sunlight and to keep the humidity less than 90%RH.

(2) Please do not leave the LCDs in the environment of high humidity and high temperature such as 60*C 90%RH.

(3) Please do not leave the LCDs in the environment of low temperature; below -20?.

5 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

(1) When you waste LCDS, it is recommended to crush damaged or unnecessary LCDs into pieces and wash them off with solvents such as acetone and ethanol, which should later be burned.

(2) If any liquid leaks out of a damaged-glass cell and comes in contact with the hands, wash off throughly with soap and water.

6 OTHERS

(1) A strong incident light into LCD panel might cause display characteristics' changing inferior because of polarizer film, color filter, and other materials becoming inferior. Please do not expose LCD module direct sunlight Land strong UV rays.

(2) Please pay attention to a panel side of LCD module not to contact with other materials in preserving it alone.

(3) For the. packaging box, please pay attention to the followings:

(3.1) Packaging box and inner case for LCD are designed to protect the LCDs from the damage or scratching during transportation. Please do not open except picking LCDs up from the box.

(3.2) Please do not pile them up more than 5 boxes. (They are not designed so.) And please do not turn over.

(3.3) Please handle packaging box with care not to give them sudden shock and vibrations. And also please do not throw them up.

(3.4) Packing box and inner case for LCDs are made of cardboard. So please pay attention not to get them wet. (Such like keeping them in high humidity or wet place can occur getting them wet.)

If your external laptop keyboard no longer functions or your external laptop USB devices, its likely your +5 Volt supply rail in down we can repair this condition the fault also affects laptop ps2 mouse operation. Example plugging in a optical laptop mouse in the USB port or PS2 seems lifeless no lights or opperating system error normally means your +5 volts supply to the ps2 or USB ports is at 0 volts we can repair this type of fault on your notebook or laptop or powerbook, we also have found PC system boards with similar faults i.e. PC powers up and keyboard error is displayed on the screen, we also noted a clicking noise comming from the internal speaker or buzzer this indicates no presence of the 5 volts needed to power the keyboard the repair was a straight forward solution, we economically repaired the system board for $80 or about 42 pounds saving our customer the expense of replacement costs.

Please no batteries are needed unless they encompass the fault, or heavy items shipped. Please no Styrofoam flakes the go everywhere when I unpack please use bubble wrap. No Laptop Bags no CD ROM's or accessories and try using boxes that are only 6 times the thickness of your laptop.
